Prague

I suppose you know Prague because it is really famous and nice historical city and serves as the capital of the Czech Republic. Since I moved to Prague to study at CTU I have had more time to explore this wonderful city which I used to think I know. However, the opposite is true - there are so many narrow sreets and hidden sights that knowing them well will require much more time. And that's it! Altough Prague is not that big city there is always something worth exploring and capturing.

The Dream of Prague Towers
The Dream of Prague Towers

Orchards under Pětřín hill offer countless views of Prague's towers, but this has to be my favourite. It takes a while to find it with a telephoto lens, the towers and turrets have to be stacked just right so they overlap as little as possible. When the soft morning light helps, and especially the fine mist that hides the modern buildings on the horizon, Prague's towers dream again.

Sun disc between the towers
Sun disc between the towers

A haze mixed with fog hangs over the city and the sun is not visible for a long time. It is not until quite late that the red disc begins to emerge in the cool grey of the morning. The towers overlap here as it is not an entirely clear composition, that would be possible a few days later when the sun would rise a little further out. Still, even this tight chaos of overlays amuses me.

Almond trees on Petřín hill
Almond trees on Petřín hill

In early spring, while the other trees are still sleeping, the slopes above the town turn pink with almond blossoms. The pink blossoms, together with the soft morning light, create an oasis of calm in the middle of Prague.

St. Nicholas Church in the morning
St. Nicholas Church in the morning

The soft morning sun penetrates the thinning mist and shines on the walls of St. Nicholas Church, towering over the flowering Petřín orchards. Although I am usually more easily attracted to Gothic buildings, the slender bell tower and high dome of this church always captivate me, especially when viewed from the west.

Dawn over Prague
Dawn over Prague

From the top of Petřín hill, you can see the whole of old Prague with its Gothic, Baroque and newer towers. At dawn and in the spring, this view is the most magical. And the play of low light in the windows of the Church of St. Francis, which light up like eyes, will probably never cease to fascinate me.

Morning on the Charles Bridge
Morning on the Charles Bridge

The rare moments when Charles Bridge is virtually devoid of people occur only in the early morning hours. Often it is then that the golden sun rises over Prague's rooftops, as here from behind the Old Town Bridge Tower.

It seemed like another dull gray morning in Prague but everything changed for a few minutes once the sun moved to the gap in clouds lighting smoky torches over the Old Town.

Blue hour

Those who want to get to the Charles bridge from the Old town must cross this rush street. Never have I imagined how beautiful contrast can car lights and old tower make until I tried to set up my tripod there. The Samy's 6-blade aperture created rich light stars which i really like here.

Dominants

I usually do not like cliché locations where everyone takes the same shot over and over again but then there is this view of the Prague castle - the most classical one. One of those views where everything is just right in terms of composition to the point when you just can not resist to take the shot again... this time with Sigma 60mm which is absolute beast of a lens! This shot is quite cropped but the sharpness is exceptional and the stars around lights are quite nicely resolved too.

As I was going over the bridge of the Legions, St. Nicolas church and St. Vitus cathedral got quite nicely framed with trees on Střelecký island. Trees were lit by colorful lights as Signal light festival was going on.

By the time I came to the Prague Castle storm was over with heavy clouds lit by the evening sun. Wet surroundings prepared vivid colors, especially those spring greens. Forgotten seats made the final detail and interest in foreground and made this classic view at least a bit special.

View from Strahov gardens to the old town. This green isle is most beautiful during the spring time of the year when trees cover with fresh green leaves. I don´t know many other historical cities with so huge park in their center.

Bad day for photography. Even bad daytime. Noisy and technically imperfect picture. Paradoxically that is why I like it and why I decided to add it to gallery. Shot from Úvoz heading Old Town.

One overcast day I went for a walk into the city. Only option to take a photo was to head for a place drowning in the shadow all year. My steps went to Radnické stairs where I found track beaten in snow exactly the way I wanted.

Something I really like about Prague is night. Dreary houses, old lanterns light and solitude makes every walk unique. You never know what awaits you at the dark end of alleyway. Shot in upper part of Thunovská street.
